Elders and Deacons

In the Bible there are two leadership roles described for the local church: Elders and Deacons

  1. Elders – “servant leaders” The spiritual leaders of the church (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Acts 6:1-7, 20:28-35, Titus 1:5-9, Heb. 13:7-19, 1 Peter 5:1-11)
    1. 4 main responsibilities – Lead under the Authority of Jesus, Care for the body of the church, Teach truth from Scripture, Model the character of Jesus
    2. Qualifications to serve as an elder – Above Reproach (No charge can be brought against him), faithful to his wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not given to drunkenness, not violent, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money, and must manage his own household well
  2. An elder is someone who, if anyone in the church was asked, ‘What does the life in Christ look like?’ those in the church could point to the elder and say, ‘Follow this man around for the next 24 hours, and you’ll see what the it looks like.”
